*Recognize signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for appropriate evaluation and diagnosis.
*Design an individualized treatment plan for IBS using shared decision-making with patients.
IBS is one of the most frequently diagnosed gastrointestinal (GI) conditions that may incur significant impairments on patient quality of life, as well as social and occupational functioning. Even so, diagnostic and consequent treatment delays are not uncommon. Here, we provide an overview of how to manage IBS from beginning to end, with a special focus on communication strategies and shared decision-making as tools to enhance clinical outcomes.
