FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Shirodhara and Takradhara?

While both involve pouring liquid over the forehead, Shirodhara uses warm medicated oil to calm the nervous system, whereas Takradhara uses cooling herb-infused buttermilk, making it ideal for treating psoriasis, heat-related stress, and insomnia.

Are there any recreational activities besides Ayurveda?

While the focus is on healing, we offer daily yoga and meditation sessions, cultural performances in the evenings, and for guests staying 14 days or more, a complimentary backwater boat trip is typically included.

Do I need a medical consultation before starting my treatments?

Yes. Every guest begins their journey with a consultation with our Vaidya (Ayurvedic doctor). They will assess your body type (Dosha) and current health status to customize your treatment and diet plan.

How far is Nikki’s Nest from the nearest airport?

Nikki’s Nest is conveniently located approximately 20 kilometers (about 40 minutes by car) from the Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) International Airport.

Are the meals provided strictly vegetarian?

At Nikki’s Nest, we primarily serve an Ayurvedic vegetarian menu at our Hibiscus restaurant to support the detoxification process. However, some non-vegetarian seafood options are available at our Orchid restaurant for those not on a strict medical diet.

Is there a minimum stay required for a detox program?

While short stays are available for relaxation, we recommend a minimum of 7 to 14 days for a meaningful detox, and 21 days for a full Panchakarma (deep cleansing) program to see long-lasting results.

Do you manufacture your own Ayurvedic medicines?

Yes. To ensure the highest purity, we manufacture our own medicated oils and herbal powders at our own plantation, Duke’s Forest Lodge, under the strict supervision of our doctors.

Is yoga included in the retreat packages?

Absolutely. We offer daily yoga and meditation sessions on our sea-facing yoga platform. These sessions are designed to complement your Ayurvedic treatments by calming the mind and improving flexibility.

Can I get a specialized diet at Somatheeram?

Absolutely. Somatheeram’s restaurant features an extensive Ayurvedic buffet with over 250 different dishes, clearly labeled for Vata, Pitta, and Kapha body types.

Can I change my treatment package after I arrive?

Yes. After your initial consultation with our Chief Vaidya, your package can be adjusted to better suit your medical needs. Please note that price adjustments may apply if the new package is more intensive.

What is Shirodhara, and what are its primary benefits?

Shirodhara is a signature Ayurvedic therapy where a continuous, gentle stream of warm medicated oil is poured onto the forehead (the "third eye" area). This deeply relaxing treatment is designed to soothe the central nervous system, effectively reducing stress, anxiety, and insomnia while improving mental clarity and emotional balance.

What is the difference between Shirodhara and Takradhara, and which one is right for my condition?

While both therapies involve the rhythmic pouring of liquids over the forehead (ajna chakra), they serve distinct therapeutic purposes based on your Prakriti (constitution) and current imbalances.

What awards has Somatheeram won?

Somatheeram is highly decorated, having won the "National Award" from the Government of India six times and the "State Award" from the Kerala Government six times as the best Ayurvedic center. It also holds over 35 other international and national accolades for excellence.
