Welcome to the World of Design with CEED
The Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is a highly regarded exam conducted annually by IIT Bombay, aimed at assessing a candidate’s aptitude in design, creativity, and problem-solving. It serves as a gateway for students aspiring to pursue a Master of Design (M.Des) or Ph.D. in design from some of India’s top institutions.
Exam Structure
- Part-A:
- Duration: 1 hour (9:00 AM to 10:00 AM)
- Total Marks: 150
- Format: Computer-based test
- Sections:
- Section 1: NAT (Numerical Answer Type)
- 8 questions
- 4 marks each
- No negative marking
- Answers must be entered using a virtual keyboard.
- Section 2: MSQ (Multiple Select Questions)
- 10 questions
- Marking Scheme:
- Full Marks: +4 (all correct options chosen, none incorrect)
- Partial Marks: +3 (all correct options, but only three chosen)
- Partial Marks: +2 (two correct options chosen, none incorrect)
- Partial Marks: +1 (one correct option chosen, none incorrect)
- Zero Marks: 0 (no options chosen)
- Negative Marks: -1 (in all other cases)
- Section 3: MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions)
- 26 questions
- 3 marks each
- 0.5 negative marks for incorrect answers
- Only one correct option out of four choices.
- Section 1: NAT (Numerical Answer Type)
- Part-B:
- Duration: 2 hours (10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon)
- Total Marks: 100
- Format: Pen-and-paper test
- Focus Areas: Design, drawing, and writing skills
- Note: Answers must be written in the answer booklet provided, with a tick on the computer screen to indicate completion.
Mandatory: All questions must be attempted.
Part-A Topics:
- Visualization and Spatial Reasoning: Ability to visualize and manipulate 2D shapes and 3D objects, understanding their spatial relationships.
- Practical and Scientific Knowledge: Familiarity with scientific principles and everyday objects.
- Observation and Design Sensitivity: Skills in detecting hidden properties in daily life and critically analyzing them. Emphasis on detail, classification, analysis, inference, and prediction.
- Environment and Society: Awareness of environmental, social, and cultural connections in design.
- Analytical and Logical Reasoning: Ability to analyze both qualitative and quantitative information.
- Language: Proficiency in reading and comprehending Standard English.
- Creativity: Understanding of analogies, metaphors, signs, and symbols.
- Art and Design Knowledge: Awareness of art/artefacts/products, artists/designers, and trends in art/design history.
- Design Methods and Practices: Knowledge of media, materials, production processes, and ergonomics.
Part-B Topics:
- Drawing: Skills in drawing products, people, or scenes with accurate proportion, line quality, composition, perspective, and shading.
- Creativity: Ability to think out-of-the-box and come up with unique and diverse solutions.
- Communication: Ability to clearly convey concepts and ideas using text and visuals.
- Problem Identification: Understanding the user and context, along with knowledge of material properties and their application in design.
